 Trailer Hitch 101

Depending on the style, hitches will vary in space and appearance WHEN PROPERLY INSTALLED

GOOD: Exposed Hitch & Hitch Body

For this standard type, both hitch receiver tube and the main hitch body stick out from the vehicle. Exposed hitches may not be visually appealing for all vehicle types. Typically these are a little more reasonably priced

Trailer Hitches 2

A great inexpensive pricing option. Usually in stock or a short lead time.  Since there are thousands of hitches please contact us for current pricing and availability

All hitches are installed at a Rack N Road store

BETTER: EXPOSED HITCH & CONCEALED BODY

These specialty hitches only expose the hitch receiver, while the main hitch body is tucked up behind the bumper. This allows for more versatility and an improved visual appearance than hitches with an exposed hitch body.

Trailer Hitches 3

A mid-range pricing option with longer lead time. Since there are thousands of hitches, please contact us for current pricing and availibilty

All hitches are installed at a Rack N Road store

BEST: HIDDEN WHEN NOT IN USE

These specialty hitches are installed up underneath the vehicle’s body and and can’t be seen when the hitch is not being used. This is the best option to consider for sportier cars and SUV’s. Limited vehicle applications.

Trailer Hitches 4

Custom built and require longer lead times. Contact us for current pricing and to see if a completely concealed hitch is available for your vehicle. Limited applications are available

These hitches are installed at a Rack N Road store and the vehicle needs to be left for an entire day

Get Hitched with Experience

Here at Rack N Road, only our certified trailer hitch installers will be working on your vehicle. Throughout our company we have 30 certified installers with an average of 10 years experience installing hitches on a very wide variety of vehicles. We want to earn your business and believe in delivering a positive experience from the very beginning. Contact your nearest retail location to speak to a Rack N Road representative.

Need a trailer hitch? We can do that! Here’s what we need to know besides the Year, Make and Model of your vehicle:

Is it going to be used for a bike rack or for towing?

Bike rack – we can install just the hitch. Already have a rack? We’ll make sure to get you the right size to make use of it. If not, then we can help you choose the right rack to fit your needs.

Towing – what kind of trailer? We just need to know what wiring connection is needed and we can get you set up. Some are basic, others might require a brake control.

How long to install? It depends. Every car is different, and can take anywhere from 1 hour to all day depending on your vehicle. We guarantee to get you in and out in one day at most.

What modifications have to be done during installation? Most of the time there is zero or minor modification. Some vehicles require the holes to be drilled or enlarged to take the mounting hardware, and some require the bumper fascia to be slightly trimmed to clear the receiver hitch. We will let you know what is required before the actual installation.

Will it void my warranty? We’ve never seen a warranty voided and we’ve installed more than 10,000 hitches. If it is a concern, just double check with the dealership.

Our Hitches

Class I Hitch

1-1/4″ receiver size opening. Can typically be used to carry 2 bikes and has a capacity to tow up to 2,000 lbs. of gross trailer weight and 200 lbs. of tongue weight This means they can handle a variety of small trailers such as single-axle utility trailers and recreational vehicle trailers that are used to haul dirt bikes, ATVs, canoes, kayaks and more. A class 1 hitch can also accept hitch-mounted cargo carriers and bike racks, making it a very useful addition to cars with limited cargo space.

Class II Hitch

1-1/4″ receiver size opening. Class II hitches can carry up to 4 bikes. They have a gross trailer weight capacity of up to 3,500 lbs. and a tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs. This makes it an excellent choice for most passenger vehicles, including full-size sedans, minivans and crossover SUVs. They can be used to tow smaller size trailers such as single-axle utility trailers, small boat trailers, pop-up campers and some recreational vehicle trailers.

Class III Hitch (MOST POPULAR)

2″ receiver size opening. The most common type of trailer hitch installed on full-size pickup trucks and SUVs, but also popular on crossover SUVs and mid-size pickups. Class III trailer hitches can carry up to 5 bikes and Range in gross trailer weight capacity from 3,500 lbs. to an impressive 8,000 lbs, and offer a comparable tongue weight capacity ranging from 350 to 800 lbs.

Class IV Hitch

2″ receiver size opening. Boasts a gross trailer weight capacity of up to 10,000 lbs. and a tongue weight capacity at 1,000 lbs. Class 4s can be used in combination with a weight distribution hitch to increase the overall towing capacity. With a weight distribution system attached, the gross trailer weight capacity increases up to 14,000 lbs. and the tongue weight capacity increases to 1,400 lbs. This makes the class 4 hitch a prime candidate for towing large boat trailers, RVs, livestock trailers and other similarly large trailers. This hitch is commonly found on such vehicles as mid to full-size pickup trucks and SUVs.

Class V Hitch

2″ or 2.5″ receiver size opening. The Xtra Duty trailer hitches have a gross trailer weight capacity of 16,000 lbs., and the Xtra Duty+ goes even higher at an unbelievable 17,000 lbs. The tongue weight capacities of both the XD and XD+ are also increased to better accommodate the massive amounts of weight they can tow, rated at 2,400 lbs. and 2,550 lbs. A class 5 trailer hitch is designed for the hard road where only 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickup trucks and SUVs dare to tread. They are capable of pulling almost any heavy-duty trailer, including livestock trailers, RVs, large boat trailers, double-axle utility trailers and toy haulers.
